DRM adventurists, sign up on the DR111 pre-production sample ordering page. I'm looking forward to a reasonably priced, working DRM standalone receiver. How about you? This device has not been approved by the F.C.C.

Comments from Allen via email:

"We only have limited units for our first Pre-production manufacture. My target market is for wholesalers and business owners. However, I do also sale to individual as well."

"We are intentionally not to disclose our price in our website at this moment due a few reasons. Our first PP has low production volume and is not target the general public yet. Hope the future price will be much less when the production volume increases. Plus we do not want to our competitors to know our pricing strategy. Therefore, we did not mention our price in our website. Regarding our quality, we aware it is not a perfect receiver yet. However, we are doing our best on improving the efficiency and quality. At this moment, we believe our DRM receiver has best quality and functionality by comparing with other companies."

DRM-Brasil goes English!

Rafael Diniz and crew recently ported their website to English. This is such a wonderful development for us (mostly monolingual North Americans!) to keep up on the largest DRM development in the Americas.

Rafael promises article translations as well. We are so fortunate that many in the DRM community are so spirited in the premise of the "open source community". Thanks Rafael, we are excited to read about the wonderful developments and great strides Brasil is making implementing DRM as the national digital broadcasting standard.

Codec2 specs and samples here. What is remarkable is that it will work down to 1400 bit rate! Check out this YouTube video. Imagine a fairly robust DRM setting being used and then 4 or more voice channels with weather, traffic, news, what have you. WOW! Open source and ham radio friendly too! I'd love to see more development and implementation of this. The image from the video explains that 1 hour of voice fits on a 1.4M floppy!

Brazil update from Rafael Diniz:

" It's clear that Brazil will choose it's Digital Radio Standard soon. Sandro Alex, a Brazilian deputy member of the Digital Radio comission said the standard will be announced in the first semester of 2012. In this context the French Guiana TDF station is conducting DRM trials on different frequencies with the transmissions beamed to Brazil. The trials are using "Radio Nacional de Brasilia FM" audio and also Brazilian related images in a slideshow service. It's great to see that the signal can be received by consumer DRM receivers inside my home. Some DRM enthusiasts all over Brazil are able to catch dropout free DRM reception with superb audio quality. Here are some videos of TDF reception made this week (using consumer receivers or SDRs).

The program is part of the weekly "DRM Mix" block sponsored by Spaceline of Bulgaria which runs from 1800-2100 UTC on the same frequency. For any West Coasties out there, KGO "Newstalk 810" in San Francisco (a true 50kW AM blowtorch up and down the West Coast of the USA) just dumped what I always thought was a fairly engaging News/Talk format in favor of mostly news. They fired numerous radio legends with no pre-announcement and have clearly bummed out lots of listeners.

Perhaps the bigger story here is that apparently the news/talk format just doesn't sell, as the new KGO owner decided that with slipping Arbitrons, the talk stuff must go. So what would a successful DRM broadcast in North America carry as far as content?

I like the mixed format of RNZI. I quickly grew weary of RCI's new immigrant directed content. Disco is nice, but Disco Palace couldn't really run 24/7 and keep an audience.

In the end, what I'm saying is that as much as I enjoy DRM, the format is not the message. What could survive on DRM when even standard broadcasting (especially AM) is dying a thousand deaths from Internet streaming, iPods, Podcasts and apathy?

DRM and Analog "live together in perfect harmony"

Here is a screen grab (click the image for zoom) I took during Disco Palace NA hour [2000-2100 UTC] on 17755kHz (Montsinery) with 17675kHz (RCI, Sackville, Portuguese). What you see is DRM 10kHz on the left and analog AM 10kHz on the right.

I know we have read over and over in journal articles where "simulcast mode" hasn't lived up to expectations (and yes, I realize that these 2 stations are nearly 3000 miles apart) but I could easily listen to one or the other with little or no interference to the analog and no interference to the DRM (at nearly 30dB SNR!)

Once again for your reading pleasure I have updated the DRM Bibliography. Please note, listed are numerous articles from our favorite DRM luminaries interviewed right here on drmna.info!

There is some great research here and many of the articles are available for the "library impaired" via PDF so you have no excuse not to be up-to-speed with current DRM technology!

For the more studious, I recommend heading out to the library and asking for an Interlibrary Loan or seeing if the journals listed are locally held. This stuff is HOT! Get reading!

DRM can be DIY

Our friend Alan Shea mentioned the need for some DIY posts on how to get started in the DRM monitoring hobby. I sent an email to another friend Crispino I5XWW. Crispino's IF converters were the first way I got active in DRM. Although Crispino doesn't promote himself much, his IF converters are top notch. I have used them with my Yaesu FT-817 and Icom PCR-100 with great success.

It is Thanksgiving Holiday in the USA, a time to reflect on the many things for which we are thankful. Friends are high on my list this year. DRMNA.info and the DRMNA Yahoo Group have become great places for like minded DRM enthusiasts to gather and are truly a labor of love for me and many others.

Allow me to thank the many friends I have met through my interest in DRM. I never imagined that something like this would yield such a dividend of great friends from all over the globe! I am truly thankful for these connections.

So if you are in the USA, Happy Thanksgiving. If you hail from somewhere else in the globe, realize that your interest, passion and hard work have contributed to our enjoyment of the radio hobby! Now go eat, just not too much!

AMSS : RDS for AM

Anyone received an AMSS signal on MW or SW (or even LW)? It looks like a great system and compliments DRM in that it can indicate digital alternatives to analogue broadcasts. I'd think North American stations would love it because they could use it for station identification and song/artist info. I wonder how well it works on skywave propagated signals? Here and here are some nice articles about it. I also discovered that Spark DRM Transmitter software can generate it. It certainly might be worth some experimentation!

Receivers all the rave at ABU

I certainly wish I could have attended.

In related news, AIR (All India Radio) continues to ramp-up DRM broadcasts. Their new schedule shows programming nearly doubling from about 8 to 16 hours each day. I'm looking forward to improved propagation so we can get a crack at some of these broadcasts in North America.

KBC Radio to Broadcast in DRM

DRM frequency has been changed to 7590.

Not so much that the headline says it all, read the comments from listeners. I think the dialog is intriguing. This is a great example of the two-way discussion that needs to occur between broadcasters and listeners! Check out their website for further news on this.

Bootable DRM Receiver?

What about a very simple "Bootable Linux" version of DReaM on a USB drive hidden inside a radio? It would be a great way to jump-start some people into DRM reception!

There once was talk of a cheap Chinese set like this. The added piece would be the tiny flash drive (512M are about $3 US retail currently). The only other problem is what it would take to get permission from Fraunhofer for the AAC+ rights (can anyone pull some strings here? The Consortium?) We have made some headway this year by getting compiled DReaM executables out there!

The radio was the Kchibo KK-DRM 01. I can't tell if it is around any more (or if it ever really was!) A single unit did get out and received some attention in 2005-2006. I'd hope that production costs have improved and it would be even cheaper now.

Reports were less than ideal but perhaps simple improvements would suffice. I'd guess it could retail at sub $30 US. Certainly a cheaper alternative to the current standalone offerings. Post your thoughts to the Yahoo Group! Is it just me, or does it look like this might be the same/similar radio?

UPDATE 20111107: Digger from DRMRX forum is an owner of the original KK-DRM 01 set. I quote from his email: "It is useless for DRM above 9 MHz, probably due to instability in the PLL or lots of jitter or noise from it."

Voice of Russia DRM transmitting with two audio streams

Glenn Hauser's DX Listening Digest (also Glenn's World of Radio) featured a report from Giampiero Bernardini in Milan, Italy. He mentioned hearing Voice of Russia on 9850 kHz at 0820z on the 7th of October broadcasting in DRM with 2 audio streams. I have always thought that this is a great and innovative use of DRM. I certainly wish I had more information, but it was described as in English and Russian "DRM RUVR 1A" & "DRM RUVR 1B"

If my knowledge of DRM is correct, this could be done in CELP or HVXC using two 8 kHz or similar audio streams. This would be near the robusteness of what we are used to with RNZI broadcasting one stream of 15.48 kHz AAC+.

These kids just might be in the beam of the first ever DRM broadcast for Southern Africa [they are in Iringa, Tanzania]. With the recent improvements in higher band propagation, be listening for the following special broadcasts. Please report to DRMNA Yahoo Group if you have any decoding success!

"The live show in French from 1200-1300 GMT will be followed two hours later (1400-1500 GMT) by a Digital Radio Show in English with international participation including the chairpersons of the DRM and WorldDMB Consortia. Both the French and English programmes will be carried live on DRM SW 21800 from Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean and should be heard in countries like South Africa, Angola, Zambia, Lesotho, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique. The English programme will also be carried at 1800 GMT into Southern Asia on DRM SW 12085, at the end of the daily regular BBC/DW transmission." I would have enjoyed getting the opportunity to chat with the luminaries that were in attendance. The receiver table looks good. I hope we get a chance to play with some of them. I have received news from Marticia that due to various business realities, MSway has halted all DRM development and will no longer be pursuing the market. MSway has a very strong business in other technologies and will continue with them. I for one am very sorry to hear this and wish Marticia and MSway all the best in their future ventures. Marticia has been a marvelous friend to me and to DRMNA. It is rare when a PR person comes across not only as a great advocate for a product and a company, but also as a genuinely nice and caring person. I have nothing but praise for her and hope MSway continues to use her skills and abilities as it focuses on other markets.

UPDATE 20110902: From a question regarding frequency coverage of the new receivers that I posed to Marticia after I published her blog post...

"I checked our website and the information on the device should be revised. The band we support for DRM is for all LW/MW/SW. In Europe the LW is in service for trial but there is no LW in India at the moment. Our product is aiming at Indian market for the immediate launch, we put the frequency range for India. Technically it is no problem to cover the frequency the reader mentioned but commercially it is not really necessary at the moment. That is the reason we only mentioned MW/SW."

Q. How long has the MSway DRM receiver been under development?

A. Actually we have started DRM business from 2011. We already made products for T-DMB and DAB and we have been probing DRM market for many years doing government funded projects.

Q. Do you have any development / R&D partners?

We have worked with the lab of Hansin University for years in digital radios.

There is a government funded research institute called KETI (Korean Electronic Technology Institute) and this institute has invested a lot of time and effort for digital broadcasting for several years. They have developed various technologies for almost all global standards and transfer their developed technology to commercial sectors. That’s why this institute is funded and audited by government.

MSway licensed KETI’s digital radio technology and decided to produce commercial products. Even though we do not have a long history in DRM, the technology and experience from KETI have planted into MSway for DRM and we are confident to deliver commercial products.

Q. What makes the MSway receiver unique?

A. First of all we will make the device affordable. Currently the commercialized DRM radios made by a few companies are too expensive. we will focus on good reception & audio quality with core functions. At the moment we do not have plan to make the device heavy (i.e. equipped with multimedia functions). We will release the basic types of products but we can make customized models upon customers’ requests.

We have developed both receivers and monitoring systems (analyzer) and it will enhance the quality of receivers.

Especially the USB type can be extended to HAM communication with antenna change.

Q. What is the main market for the receiver? Will it be available in the USA/North America?

A. Currently we are informed that India officially will launch DRM. Therefore the immediate demand in India is quite promising. Also Brazil and Russia is reviewing DRM for the official launch and DRM consortium people are promoting DRM in those countries. We naturally should aim the markets that have plans to start DRM broadcasting officially like India, Brazil and Russia.

There is a lot of interest from Europe and Australia and we will go to the markets with high interests.

North America? Why not? If there is demand, we will look into the possibilities to launch our products. However we need to study the market very carefully.

Q. Do you have any projected production run and time-frame for the first model/models?

We are getting some actual requests from broadcasters and local distributors in different countries. Throughout IBC show in September we will meet more potential customers for commercial productions.

We have decided to emphasize on the DRM reception with good audio quality to go into the market quickly. Other multimedia functions and other data service function can be added by customers’ requests later on. Our ultimate goal at the moment is “spread affordable DRM radios as soon and as many as possible”. We will offer both module type and final product type and the customers can decide their release time and date.

If we can meet some actual buyer during the IBC show, we have a time-line to deliver the products within 15 weeks.

We also have a monitoring system for broadcasters and other professionals. KETI have completed field tests in India this year and all the participants and local broadcasters were impressed by the reception and functions.

It is the only monitoring solution supporting both DRM30 and DRM+ at the same time.

We have revised commercialized DAB tuner into DRM tuner and it gave us an exceptional reception result compare to other competitors’ products. With KETI’s experience in DAB & DAB+ we will create the version with DAB, DAB+ test as well.

I also have something new to share with you. In Korea we started a new government funded project called “WWR (World Wide Radio)”. I was also involved in this project when it was proposed last year.

A group of professionals in various sections (I was representing Marketing part) teamed up and wrote a proposal to “Ministry of Information and Economics” in Korea and the government body evaluated submitted proposals and selected some projects to support funds.

This “WWR project” is targeting to produce the chipset which can supports all different global digital radio standards.

The result of project will be producing a chipset that able to receiver DAB, DAB+, DRM, DRM+ and more at the same time within 2 years.

I hope we, MSway, can get benefit out of this project soon.

Q. Could you please give us some background about yourself and MSway?

I studied sociology in a university in Korea and Hotel management in the Lausanne Hotel School, Switzerland, worked in Sweden and England as an hotelier. I have worked in service industry dealing with overseas businesses for 10 years.

Surprisingly I could have started my second career in IT industry as a global marketer. I have been involved in data broadcasting software solutions for digital radio and mobile TV. Starting with DAB, I have promoted solutions in different territories of the world for DVB-T/H, ATSC-MH, T/S-DMB and HD radio. Also I have been involved in some government projects in Korea & Singapore for digital radio. Now I am promoting DRM and I am very proud of being a professional in Digital radio industry.

MSway has been strong in Embedded solution of multimedia chip modules. Our CEO, Mr. M.S. Lee, started MCU application module business for Automotive, medical and Industrial products. Since then we have expanded our business area to PAN(Personal Area Network) and portable multimedia devices.

We have produced PND, PMP with mobile TV and radio functions. Based on our technology & experiences we are planning to create more services & products for Broadcasting-telecommunication convergence.

"Did you already hear that we were able to lift the upper frequency limit to 200 MHz? With a little trick it's also possible to tune to the FM Band. The only thing is thats very usefull to put a FM Bandpass Filter into the antenna line to "sort out" all frequencies that are not in the FM Band to clean it up. If tested a lot last two weeks, the quality is very well. Very interesting: as three Pappradios went to Brasil, they now test the Pappradio with DRM+. The initial test went well..."

"We hesitate to predict the future, but at the current pace it is possible that DRM will spread over a large geographic region with higher demographics than HD Radio within the next year. For example, India represents a huge number of potential listeners when compared to the U.S. market. These demographics are necessary to drive the demand for receivers in sufficient volume to get retail price points at the right level."

Here is a short statement from our colleague Rafael Diniz. Great news indeed!

"Brazil starts to prepare the laws for the introduction of DRM in the Short Waves...
On 10th February the Anatel (the Brazilian FCC) issued a proposal stating that, beyond other things, the new "Sound Broadcasting Basic distribution Plan" proposal for the 49m (5950 to 6200kHz), 31m (9500 to 9775kHz), 25m (11700 to 11975kHz), 19m (15100 to 15450kHz) and the 16m (17700 to 17900kHz) bands has the objective to propitiate the revitalization of this service with the adoption of Digital Radio.

Well, the only Digital Radio standard being tested in Brazil in the Short Waves band, and in fact the only Digital Radio standard for the Short Waves recognized by ITU is the Digital Radio Mondiale, so we can consider, not yet officially, of course, that the DRM is the Brazilian Digital Radio standard for the Short Waves Band!"

B&W LCD display for our DRM rxer?

Have you ever been to Kohl's, the budget retailer? They have (at least locally in Salem, OR) replaced their pricing signage with these LCD dot-matrix displays. The manufacturer touts 5 year battery life on them! What a great, low cost display for our "budget line" receivers! They appear to be manufactured for Altierre by Li & Fung Trading Ltd.

I think this photo is a simulation as the in-store signs look a bit more pixleated. Anyone have any idea as to what we might be able to use as an off-the-shelf equivalent? If Kohl's can put them on the shelf of every product in the store, they MUST be dirt-cheap!

IN OTHER NEWS: Stay tuned. I hope to soon be posting an interview with Rafael Diniz of DRM-Brasil. He is involved in promoting DRM to Brazil as they are making their digital conversion decisions. I think Brazil represents the only "American" country to be near to accepting DRM as their digital broadcasting format. The added bonus will be having his answers in English for us mono-linguists!

FOLLOW-UP: Yesterday I saw a greeting card that had a digital frame inside! $12.99 at our local Fred Meyer retail chain. These little displays have reached disposable status!

26MHz local broadcasting

I haven't heard much about them lately, but there have been quite a few 26MHz band DRM tests. What services would you transmit if 26MHz local broadcasting was an option in the USA? I can imagine multilingual channels to serve local ethnic groups, tourism support, weather and traffic broadcasts, local news, Diveemo of local events...

Check our bibliography for articles written about some of these tests. I for one love the idea of a single frequency network of low power transmitters utilizing DRM on 26MHz. We'd have to do some work on changing FCC regs too.

Le Tourneau DRM Receiver

Check out this video. By pure coincidence, I met Cam Nichols [KF7KIH] on a local ham radio repeater.

Cam was the project coordinator for this Le Tourneau DRM receiver project. It was a cooperative research project between HCJB, Le Tourneau and Rockwell Collins. I'm hoping we can get Cam to write us an article on his experiences working on this project!

If you are not already aware, the FCC regulations prohibit strictly domestic broadcasting by U.S. shortwave stations. Of course, this is an obscure and fairly well ignored regulation. Let's see if the FCC will take notice and consider changing this "Cold War" remnant! Join the crusade to change this at the Reboot FCC site.
