CDNSE Newstar DR111 Review (part 4)

Here is a nice picture of Allen at the Continental NAB 2012 booth holding the Newstar DR111. More DRM NAB photos here.

On the right side is the 1/8th inch, 50 Ohm antenna connection. As you know from my previous review post, I have tried the DE31 Active antenna and a cheap reel antenna with great success

Next on my list of things to try was my Select-a-tenna. I have two models, one with an external 8th inch jack and one without. I connected the one with the jack via a short cable to the DR111 and began to play with MW. I tried 1070 KNX in Los Angeles and 810 KGO in San Francisco (I'm located in the state of Oregon).

Radio New Zealand International B11 sked

One of our "sure bet" DRM broadcasters here out West just published their B11 schedule. I really enjoy listening to them in the evening. RNZI is Mostly talk and news, but we often get a taste of NZ Rock and great Pacific Islands music. I still hope for an interview with their "frequency man" Adrian Sainsbury soon! More Mobile Adventures

Just a quick post about my newest mobile fun! I went out and bought a 102" steel CB whip (this will keep me out of the garage and the drive-thru!) I had to secure the magnetic mount base with a piece of nylon cord since the wind load is quite high.

OFF TOPIC WARNING!

Off Topic but a nice weather satellite image I captured using Pappradio and MultiPSK. 8682 kHz from Pt. Reyes CA.

As you can see, when there is no DRM to copy, I'm enjoying utility and analog BC monitoring on Pappradio!

Fun with Pappradio - Mobile DRM

Here is a repost since my first "fun with Pappradio" got eaten somehow!

Today I loaded my Asus Eee PC 901A, Pappradio and C. Crane FM modulator into my Honda and went for a drive. Disco Palace and TDP Radio were on so I knew I'd have nice signals to work with. I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

Pappradio update [compatible with DRM+!]

From the Pappradio website via Google Translate:

This new version of the DLL Winrad Pappradio is now for frequencies from 20 kHz to 210 MHz tunable...

From Stephan via email:

"Did you already hear that we were able to lift the upper frequency limit to 200 MHz? With a little trick it's also possible to tune to the FM Band. The only thing is thats very usefull to put a FM Bandpass Filter into the antenna line to "sort out" all frequencies that are not in the FM Band to clean it up. If tested a lot last two weeks, the quality is very well. Very interesting: as three Pappradios went to Brasil, they now test the Pappradio with DRM+. The initial test went well..."

Great news indeed!

Pappradio January update

Here is a quick update from Stephan on the current status of the Pappradio project...

"We have been very busy with all the Pappradios over the last month. About 400 have been assembled and sent out to their new owners. We will get the next batch of PCBs in one or two weeks.

Pappradio and happy listeners

Click here to read a great post with pictures of a happy German Pappradio user (I've linked to the Google translation). I hope to hear more from Stephan Schaa soon about how best North Americans can place an order. Mark on DRMNA Yahoo Group also reports success.

Linking-up ideas

Stephan's work with the Pappradio was recognized with a link in the current DRM.org newsletter. There is also information from Ludo Maes about are recent trip to Asia to visit hardware manufacturers. What can we do to encourage rapid R&D and perhaps getting Stephan and Alan (amongst others) together with this overseas hardware development?

Pappradio

HCJB Germany has developed the Pappradio. It is near the magic $100 pricepoint and looks to be the perfect hobbyist RXer. Check out the specs. I'll post North American ordering information when it becomes available.
