Panasonic & Zambia

The DRM Consortium is pleased to welcome Panasonic as its newest member.  Panasonic joined other DRM members at the recent DRM General Assembly held in Germany.

DRM is the choice for Zambia, according to Mr Eustace Nkandu, Director
at the Independent Broadcasting Authority of this country who stressed
that: “Zambia wants to commence the process of digital migration for
radio and the position is that DRM is the most favoured digital sound
system.”

The regulatory body in Zambia has been asked to spearhead the country’s digital migration for radio. As a result, the regulator has sent out
letters to all radio stations licensed in Zambia to send their submissions on digital migration. This will be followed by a meeting of the key stakeholders for further discussions.

South Africa with MW DRM on the air!

"The first ever DRM (medium wave) transmission generated in South Africa will be on air from tomorrow. Radio Pulpit is starting a trial on 1440 kHz broadcasting using a 25kW transmitter (and broadcasting 10kW DRM) using a low profile antenna. The broadcast, with up to two programmes and eventually all the extra features and benefits offered by DRM, will cover greater Pretoria and parts of Johannesburg." Read more here.

That Ruxandra is some jet-setter! I really appreciate her work all over the world in promotion of what we all know is THE digital standard for LW, MW and SW - DRM30!

19 July DRM30 BBC Broadcast to South Africa

Live DRM SW transmission aimed at Southern Africa on July 19th on the occasion of the SABA workshop

The Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) Consortium will use its strong presence at this year’s Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA) Digital Broadcasting Infrastructure and Platforms Event, during Mediatech (Africa’s biggest technology and trade show exhibition for the media and entertainment industry) to demonstrate the possibilities of the DRM standard. During its morning workshop on Friday 19th July DRM experts, representing well-known Consortium members companies and organizations such as Ampegon, Fraunhofer IIS, and Nautel, will make presentations and be available to answer any questions.

To complement the workshop DRM is pleased to announce that it is planning a live broadcast to South Africa which will be transmitted on 21,460 kHz during the Workshop. The two hour transmission will feature BBC programmes in English and will be on air from 1000-1200 GMT, 1200-1400 local time.

Ruxandra Obreja, DRM Chairperson, says: “This is an exciting opportunity for delegates to not just hear about the technology but to listen to the excellent audio quality that DRM can bring to radio lovers in Africa. DRM is the only standard for all bands below and above 30 MHz that could offer so much to listeners across the continent.”

UPDATE: Glenn Hauser of DXLD muses that the TX site is Ascension Island. There have been other tests from there recently.
