UPDATE - digital text from The Mighty KBC

9450 kHz North America on 3 February 2013 @ 0000z-0200z

Because of poor shortwave reception in January, we will for the most part repeat the digital text transmissions from two weeks ago during The Mighty KBC North America broadcast at 0000-0200 UTC, 3 February (Saturday evening in North America), on 9450 khz. At about 0130 UTC, 4xPSK63R will be centered on 1000 Hz and MFSK64 centered on 2000 Hz. (For 4XPSK63R, use Fldigi 3.21.65 or newer: OpMode > PSKR > MultiCarrier > 4XPSK63R.) At just before 0200 UTC, an image will be transmitted in the MFSK16 mode. Also, MT63-2000 (long interleave) will be centered on 1500 Hz. This will be an Flmsg formatted transmission, with html. Fldigi and Flmsg can be downloaded from www.w1hkj.com.

Amazing performance from MT63-2K

In our on-going, off-topic saga of digital text modes, the MT63-2K from last night's Mighty KBC broadcast takes the cake! MT63 shares OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) in common with DRM. Boy did it once again show how it shines via a disturbed HF/SW signal path.

Here is an MP3 file of the final text transmission of the broadcast, recorded at my West Coast location. Take a look at this blog post from Dr. Elliott for the details. Mind you, this is being transmitted from Bulgaria, some 6000+ miles to my location.

I hope I am not losing you here, but digital text modes are a perfect match to DRM30 in terms of augmenting what is already available on shortwave. The most impressive elements of these tests are that no modifications are required to either the transmitter or an off-the-shelf analogue AM shortwave receiver.

Let Dr. Elliott take control of your PC again

UPDATE: 20121207

9450kHz on Sunday 9 December @ 00:00 UTC -
The Giant Jukebox with Eric van Willegen.

Expect even more from Dr. Elliot this weekend on The Mighty KBC! Look forward to trying PSKR125 and two flavors of MT63! Check their website site for more details. Have FLMSG ready for receiving a webpage via shortwave.

I must say. these digital text tests are some fun! The music played by Eric is great too. I bet he plays something cool that you have never heard before! I'm looking forward to their upcoming holiday specials, especially in DRM! The Mighty KBC is a true friend of radio fans and DRM enthusiasts. Be sure to drop them a message and tell them how much you appreciate their fun and innovative take on shortwave broadcasting!

Non-DRM digital test on The Mighty KBC 18 November

Experimenting with digital text modes on 9450 kHz

"At The Mighty KBC, we have been experimenting with digital text modes during our Sunday 0000-0200 UTC broadcast on 9450 kHz. Text via shortwave can be a useful substitute if the Internet is disrupted or blocked. To decode the digital text transmissions, we suggest that you download FLDIGI from www.w1hkj.com. Please also download FLMSG, because we will use it on our 25 November broadcast.

On 18 November, the first text transmission at about 0130 UTC will be in three modes simultaneously. On the "waterfall," PSKR125 will be centered at 1000 Hz, DominoEX 16 at 1500 Hz, and MFSK32 at 2000 Hz. Decode one of the modes from your radio, then decode the others from your recording. Just before 0200 UTC, The Mighty KBC program schedule will be sent as a web page. Two modes will be available: PSKR250 on the left, and MFSK64 on the right. Decode one from the radio, and the other from your recording."
